Hoop House Project

(Fall 2016)

In collaboration with Han Min Thet Kyaw, Christine Kim, Shariwa Sharada, Kai Zhang, and Christine Zhu.

Tasked with creating a greenhouse that is mounted upon a concrete planter and could take any plant grown within it through the first frost of Pittsburgh. These Hoop Houses would be temporarily mounted at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Downtown Pittsburgh. The materials to be used were heat-shrink plastic, aluminum conduit, and multiple joining mechanisms such as nuts and bolts. The following project dealt with the issues of strong wind forces through streamlining and ease of access.

The project dealt with the issues of strong wind forces through streamlining and ease of access. Throughout the designing and building process, we chose from each of our inspirations to pinpoint a final design. I delegated drafting, rendering, digital and physical model building, and final construction to different members based on their strengths. I took charge of the parts sheet, assemble page, assembly details, and anchor details page as shown above. My groupmates and I had spent hours adjusting minor angles to improve the design and entering debates to settle any disagreements. It was magnificent to see and work with my peers. This group work experience had transformed my leadership skills and strongly improved my collaboration skills.
